Golden Planet Award 2024 – Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker shares his vision on sustainability

The company Henry Lambertz GmbH & Co. KG, represented by its sole owner Prof. Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker, received the award for its outstanding implementation of sustainability in practice.

Its corporate philosophy is based on a deeply rooted traditional culture of sustainability, which is evident not only in its daily business processes, but also in the selection of raw materials and in its social responsibility.

Bühlbecker was delighted to accept the award and made it clear that sustainability in its implementation is possible for every company and is part of today’s entrepreneurial responsibility. For him, it is clear that this is the path to successful entrepreneurship. The implementation of sustainability in business practice is a matter of course for him: “Sustainability is something I was born with”.

Prof. Bühlbecker is thus a role model for sustainability in practice, combining tradition with innovation and social awareness and demonstrating that entrepreneurial success can go hand in hand with responsibility for people and the environment.

The award was presented for traditionally practiced sustainability culture and international humanitarian commitment.

Interview with Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker:

Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker, owner of the long-established company Lambertz, talks in an interview about the importance of sustainability, social responsibility and the challenges facing medium-sized companies in Germany. His commitment to the environment and society runs through all aspects of his business activities.

„Turning Ideas into Action“: Vision and implementation

“It’s not enough to just talk, you have to act,” emphasizes Dr. Bühlbecker, referring to his many years of involvement in the Clinton Initiative, where he was awarded the “Turning Ideas into Action” prize. He explains: “Social responsibility means helping where it is needed – on a large and small scale.”

This is also reflected in his support for numerous aid projects, from the Elton John AIDS Foundation to cooperation with local initiatives such as the annual St. Nicholas campaign for children in hospitals and kindergartens.

Sustainability as a corporate principle

“Sustainability has always been part of our philosophy – even without us calling it that in the past,” explains Bühlbecker. He refers to Lambertz’s 335-year tradition and the goal of making the company fit for the future for generations to come. Sustainability is implemented throughout the entire value chain:

  • Sustainable raw materials: Lambertz relies on fair-trade, organic and sustainably produced ingredients.
  • Innovative products: The company is reducing its ecological footprint with new vegan and organic products, such as chocolate-free alternatives made from oats.
  • Cultural asset protection: As the guardian of German baking traditions such as Aachener Printen and Dresdner Stollen, Lambertz preserves the protected geographical designations of origin.

Sustainability despite challenges

In view of rising energy costs and regulatory hurdles, Bühlbecker warns: “Politicians must not drive companies up the wall.” He calls for pragmatic approaches that give companies room to maneuver instead of blocking them with overly complex regulations. “It’s sad when companies have to choose between sustainability and safeguarding their existence,” he says.

At the same time, he emphasizes that sustainable initiatives are often not a question of cost, but can be implemented through smart action. One example is the reduction of food waste: “We could help poorer people and save money at the same time.”

Inspiration for others

When asked what he advises other companies to do, Bühlbecker replies: “Everyone can do something. It starts with small steps and asking what makes the company special.” He emphasizes the importance of authenticity: “You have to be passionate about what you do and find your own USP.”

His commitment shows: Sustainability is not just a duty, but an opportunity to combine tradition and innovation and have a positive impact on society and the environment.
